Thermal cameras do not use radiation from the frequency of the IR spectrum, whereas the thermal camera uses a wavelength frequency in a completely different range. The IR camera spans visible light within the spectrum of 400nm and 750nm, whereas the thermal camera operates at a wavelength of up to 14,000nm.  

Thermal cameras detect a difference in radiation from an object, while an IR camera detects light from an object. This case means that the IR camera can only work while identifying an integral IR LED.

Design

The IR camera has a design and functions that work the same way as a standard optical camera. The thermal camera is different because it has a different design with notably different materials like germanium. The sensors are different to respond differently to the detection of photons; hence the technology tends to cost more than that of an IR camera.

Distance

Thermal cameras as a favorite for most security-related applications because they can sense wavelengths from greater distances. IR cameras have limited operational ranges of up to 200 meters and often depend on the target’s reflection of a specific wavelength.

You will need a more powerful illuminator when using an IR camera because the field of view tends to reduce with increasing distance. Additionally, IR cameras have LED degradation after approximately five years. Thermal cameras are different because their only limit is the operational range and the sensitivity of the lens.

Wavelength

An infrared security camera uses a short wavelength to illuminate the target area, whereas a thermal imaging system uses mid or long-wavelength energy. Thermal imagers are better in regions with long wavelengths, or hot zones, because they can scan through smoke, dust, headlights, dust and other aerial obstructions.

The heat signatures that affect the wavelength of the cameras are visible on the monitor as black or white. Make sure you test the scanner’s response in different conditions before purchasing particular applications.
